چکیده

Radiotherapy is one of the main ways head and neck cancers are treated; radiation is used to kill cancerous cells and prevent their recurrence. Complex treatment planning is required to ensure that enough radiation is given to the tumour, and little to other sensitive structures (known as organs at risk) such as the eyes and nerves which might otherwise be damaged. This is especially difficult in the head and neck, where multiple at-risk structures often lie in extremely close proximity to the tumour. It can take radiotherapy experts four hours or more to pick out the important areas on planning scans (known as segmentation). This research will focus on applying machine learning algorithms to automatic segmentation of head and neck planning computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans at University College London Hospital NHS Foundation Trust patients. Through analysis of the images used in radiotherapy DeepMind Health will investigate improvements in efficiency of cancer treatment pathways. 1 1 1 1

Impact of geometric uncertainties on dose distribution during intensity modulated radiotherapy of head-and-neck cancer: the need for a planning target volume and a planning organ-at-risk volume

We assessed the effect of geometric uncertainties on target coverage and on dose to the organs at risk (OARS) during intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for head-and-neck cancer, and we estimated the required margins for the planning target volume (PTV) and the planning organ-at-risk volume (PRV). For eight head-and-neck cancer patients, we generated IMRT plans with localization uncertainty...

Comparison of Absorbed Dose in Thyroid and Lens as Organs at Risk Between in vivo Dosimetry and 3-D Treatment Planning Calculation in Head and Neck Radiotherapy by Linac Beam

Introduction: Critical organs and structures may receive significant amounts of irradiation even if they are not the target of radiotherapy or located outside the treatment field. Although the sensitive thyroid gland and lens are not directly the targets of treatment, they can be affected by irradiation during the treatment of tumours in head and neck region. The purpose of thi...

Approximation of head and neck cancer volumes in contrast enhanced CT

BACKGROUND Tumor volume may serve as a predictor of response to radiochemotherapy (RCT) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Computer assisted tumor volumetry requires time-consuming slice-by-slice manual or semi-automated segmentation. We questioned how accurately primary tumor and suspect cervical lymph node (LN) volumes can be approximated by the maximum tumor diameters in three...

Integrating fMRI data into 3D conventional radiotherapy treatmentplanning of brain tumors

Introduction: This study was aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data in treatment planning for patients with CNS tumors in order to decrease the injury of functional regions of the brain followed by increase in life quality and survival of patients. This study pursues a novel approach in planning for the treatment of brai...
